Research

Many of the outstanding problems in computer graphics are as much human as technical. We tackle these problems in a field we call design graphics: engineering meaningful imagery for and about the people that use them.

Redesigning the Image Itself
Digital images were designed to match machines. It's time that they were redesigned for people.

Projects: gigapixel imagery,
temporally adaptive rendering, supra-threshold LOD, interruptible rendering, simplification of massive models, Semisimp, RSimp, predicting visual fidelity, visual/temporal tradeoff, frame rate effects, peripheral LOD.

Designing Visual Interfaces
How should the visual interface change when it leaves the desktop?

Projects: icon effectiveness,
StorySpace, Cognitive Map Probe, CognitiveCubes, commodity tracking, driving assessment, phobia therapy, interactive predistortion.

Depicting Design
Automating the digital modeling of the things we make starting with cities.
Designing Effective Imagery
Bringing visualization out of the ivory tower with more meaning and greater impact.

Projects: Skimmer, Quilts, Histographs, TextPool.
