Designing Visual Interfaces

How should the visual interface change when it leaves the desktop?

  Icon Effectiveness
Icons haven't changed in a long time, even as they become increasingly important. It's time we made them better: easier to find, easier to shortcut.

StorySpace
A system for creating interactive posters in the highschool classroom. StorySpace's tabletop format encourages group discussion and its tangible, visual interface engages students who might otherwise lose interest.

Cognitive Map Probe
A system for the assessment of wayfinding ability based on the Segal model, a tangible tabletop interface.

Cognitive Cubes
A new system for the assessment of cognitive spatial ability based on ActiveCube, an interactive building block interface.

Commodity tracking
With very rudimentary computer vision techniques, we can track the spatial position of users viewing virtual environments -- without cabling.

Driving assessment
We evaluate a simple PC-based VR driving assessment system and find that it effectively identifies those with cognitive impairment, and works well with elderly patients.

Phobia therapy
By simulating the passenger's flight experience, we enable a new virtual exposure therapy that is just as effective as traditional therapy but is also less threatening, less expensive, more private and more convenient.

Interactive predistortion
Texture mapping hardware can be used to compensate for optical or geometric distortion by interactively predistorting the image immediately before it is displayed.
